Abstract

The article discusses the language peculiarities of two editions of 25 elegies written by the poet Fyodor Kozelskiy, first published in 1769 and later revised in 1778. The comparison of two editions shows several trends in development of the genre-specific poetic language, namely: replacement or withdrawal of obsolete words and word forms, rarely used and dialectal words, simplification of complex syntactic constructions, correction of stylistic blunders. Not only did all these corrections improve the style of elegies, but they also made their sense much clearer. However, in the second edition Kozelskiy used more slavоnicisms, thereby rendering the style of his elegies more solemn and the poetic language similar to the language characteristic of odes or tragedies.
