Lexeme roksolane, Its Variants and Synonyms in M.V. Lomonosov’s Language
Abstract
The article examines the use of the following names associated with the lexeme roksolane in the historical works of M. V. Lomonosov: roksoliane, rossolane, rossy, alane volzheskie, rossane, roxane, rane, rune, rugenskie slaviane, rugyiane, ruzhane, alanorsi. The idiosyncratic meaning and usage of these words in Lomonosov’s texts was formed under the influence of various Western European sources. One of the ways to organize ethnonyms of different origins was their semantic identification based on a common set of phonemes, regardless of the order of their arrangement (for example, roksolane–rossy–alanorsi). As a result, the author combined the names under consideration into an individual system, in which the same words could act as variants, synonyms (including contextual ones) and isolated lexical units.
