Abstract
In this article we publish for the first time N. P. Popov’s report containing a vocabulary description of the lost Russian translation of Gerasimos Vlachos’ Lexicon (Thesaurus) attributed to Sylvester Medvedev, and propose an analysis of this description. N. P. Popov’s report shows the lexical richness of this translation (equivalent synonymy, the coexistence of Church Slavonic and East Slavic forms, the presence of colloquial vocabulary, rare and unique lexemes, etc.). These facts determined its role for the Card File of the Old Russian Dictionary being created at that time and for the future Dictionary of the Russian Language of the 11th–17th centuries. Most of the lexemes from the Lexicon used in the Dictionary of the Russian Language of the 11th–17th centuries are hapax legomena. In addition, a layer of common vocabulary in the Belarusian, Ukrainian and Polish languages, characteristic of the south-western lands, is shown. The lexical coincidences contained in the Gerasimos Vlachos’ Thesaurus and Fedor Polikarpov’s Trilingual Lexicon deserve attention. The question of Sylvester Medvedev’s authorship remains unsolved due to the necessity of additional facts for making the correct decision.
