The Verb nadležat’ in Historical Dictionaries: from Spatial to Modal Meaning

Rusanova S. The Verb nadležat’ in Historical Dictionaries: from Spatial to Modal Meaning SHLL, Vol. 6. 2023 , 54–72
Abstract
The article discusses the development of deontic meaning in the verb nadležat’ which is a frequent modal explicator in the business parlance of the 18th century. The research investigates the lexicographic definitions of the aforementioned verb, as well as its lexico-semantic variants and shades of its meanings throughout different periods. We find out that originally the verb featured spatial semantics and its modal meaning rose due to functional competition with verbs containing the same root but differing in prefixes (nadležat’, naležat’ and prinadležat’). A special attention is also paid to the fact that the verb nadležat’ had an intermediate stage in its semantic evolution. This stage acts as a link motivating the reinterpretation of spatial meaning into modal one. Thus, the article confirms the relevance of semantic calquing of modal meaning and proves that a certain verb changed the meaning according to the accumulated semantic potential.
