Abstract
The article is devoted to the history of the linguistic term evropeizm (европеизм), which was first used by Prince P.A. Vyazemsky in the first quarter of the 19th century with a somewhat different meaning than today. Comparison with the Italian language is particularly interesting, because the Italian term europeismo dates back to the same period and has undergone a semantic evolution almost entirely coinciding with that of the Russian term. From a historical-linguistic point of view, the term and the category of lexical units to which it refers served both Vyazemsky in Russia and Leopardi in Italy to distance themselves from French as a national language.
