Vernacular as a base of a fiction text (on the language of the Tale of Frol Skobeev)
Abstract
The article deals with the vernacular problem of the Russian standard language at the beginning of the 18th century in connection with the language specificities of the Tale of Frol Skobeev. The speech basis of the Tale is an oral narrative, colloquial resources and some features of the business language were used to build it. The influence of the business language had being demonstrated by the usage of the law’s formulas and modified idioms. Since the dialect words were not used in the Tale, its speech basis can be defined as common spoken Russian. It is shown in the paper, that the principal features of the 18th century’s vernacular were the all-Russian distribution, functioning in the spoken language, evaluative semantics and expressive connotations. The colloquial-based language of the Tale proves that vernacular has already had a status of a functional style of Russian.
