Abstract

Тhis paper describes relying on the lexicographic sourses old folk Russian and Serbian measures that are based on parts of the human body and even on human perceptual and physical abilities. This paper has three goals. The first goal is cultural-historical: to show a remarkable similarity between Serbian and Russian folk measures, even in the case of some unusual, but very creative people’s ideas for using one's body in measuring objects and phenomena. The second goal is lexical-semantic: to show and analyze the creative logical connections that led to the naming of measures. Their source is metonymy, which is often a chain process and very complex. The third goal is theoretical-linguistic: to present old, folk measures as an excellent example of anthropocentrism in language and to confirm the embodiment, as one of the basic concepts of cognitive linguistics.
