Abstract

The article presents the results of a study aimed at examining the dynamics of changes in the semantic structure of selected borrowed words related to socio-political vocabulary; it identifies the features of their functioning in journalistic contexts of the second half of the 19th century and compares the observations with the lexicographic representation in the 19th century dictionaries. Particular attention is paid to the contexts in which there is determinologization of socio-political vocabulary, the development of these units’ figurative meaning or shades of meaning; it presents contexts, including borrowed words relating to other thematic groups which being a part of phraseological unit can be attributed to the socio-political vocabulary; it also shows the use of words with the meaning which is unusual compared with 19th century dictionaries. Conclusions are drawn that the journalistic texts of the 19th century, especially the second half of it, are a rich source for replenishment of lexicographical description of borrowings.
