The Interethnic Relations Reflection in the 19th Century Neology (Nouns)
Abstract
In the Russian literary language of the 19th century, we can observe an active process of new words formation, due to reasons of an extralinguistic nature. The problem of interethnic relations during this period was of special attention of the Russian public, so the discussion of such issues required an appropriate metalanguage, which led to the emergence of new linguistic means. Among the innovations of the 19th century, one can find nouns (mostly abstract ones) naming social movements, nationalist doctrines, scientific hypotheses and processes related to ethnic and interethnic problems, and behavioral characteristics of representatives of various ethnic groups. Despite the use of traditional word-formative formants in the process of new vocabulary formation, the lexical system is significantly enriched with a variety of ethnonymous vocabulary, which forms a complex system, has diffuse semantics and is actually not reflected in lexicographic sources.
