Abstract

Early journalistic work of L. Tolstoy reflects the general language processes of the middle of the 19th century in the lexical sphere: an increase in the number of abstract vocabulary used in journalism and fiction; semantic expansion of many words; stylistic shifts associated with giving the words a socio-political and moral-ethical sound. In addition, “Note...” Tolstoy records the transition of individual words from scientific discourse to journalistic, the development of evaluative (mostly negative) in previously neutral lexemes. The analyzed text gives an idea of the characteristic lexical features of Tolstoyʼs idiostyle: in particular, the heuristic character of verbal repetitions
