Abstract

The article deals with the correlation of the use of forms with the suffixes-formatives-and-their quantity. The main attention is paid to the examples of brodyazhestvo ‘vagrancy’ (a word that is perceived as outdated) and brodyazhnichestvo ‘vagrancy’ (fully corresponding to the usus of the modern Russian language). The authors ana-lyze the incidence of these and similar pairs of words in the Russian language of 18 – early 21 centuries according to contemporary electronic resources, on a National corpus of Russian (RLNC) and the resource "Library of the lexicographer" (Institute for linguistic studies, Russian Academy of Sciences). When the forms of language are dominant with little semantic opposition to their backgrounds, it turns out that the lexicographer’s library sometimes shows earlier dates of entry of certain entities into the Russian literary language. In general, both resources provide data that comple-ment each other.
